Welcome to the website of John Hanc and
Enhanced Communications, LLC
Here you’ll find samples of my work as a journalist and author and information about my academic life—as well as my legacy custom publishing service, Enhanced Communications, LLC. (Check out the recent video of me explaining those services in an interview: https://youtu.be/4Nyr22shoGw)
Did I mention that I live on Long Island, that I graduated from Emerson College in Boston and received my graduate degree in journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (here’s a recent profile of me in the alumni magazine On Wisconsin) . . . and that I’ve run 29 marathons? No? Okay, so now that we got that out of the way, I hope you’ll find something of interest here, and I look forward to hearing from you.—John Hanc
May 2021: I’m happy to say that two of my Newsday stories were honored at the Fair Media Council’s annual Folio Awards, which recognize the best in news and social media on Long Island. One is about the first transatlantic passenger flights, which were made on gigantic Boeing seaplanes taking off from Port Washington. The other is about the 1898 quarantine in Montauk, on LI’s East End, of thousands of American soldiers returning from the Spanish American War—and the desperate and heroic efforts made to prevent the spread of yellow fever (This was a particularly timely story when we were all in lockdown last April). Here are links to both; I hope you enjoy them.

Also proud of my award for Best Profile in the 2020 Long Island Press Club Media Awards. This story is about Sondra Rose, a feisty, fund-raising grandmother who, in her 80s, still walks marathons—while her luncheons of poached salmon, noodle salad and crustless spinach pie magically loosen the pockets of donors from Long Beach, New York, to Delray Beach, Florida. And it’s all for a very good cause.
Finally, my runner-up in the Best History category at the 2020 LIPC Media Awards. This one about an archaeological dig at a little-known Revolutionary War battlefield here on Long Island.
It’s a privilege to tell these and other stories of such fascinating people and events, past and present (you can check out more elsewhere on my website). If you have an idea, let me know! jhanc@optonline.net
